Voted Japan's number one wake bait!

The deps Buzzjet is one of the most advanced topwater lure designs in the world today. Released in 2003, the Buzzjet was at first available only in Japan. It was quickly voted one of the top lures in Japan.

Since late 2005, the Buzzjet became available in North America and worldwide. The rapidly increasing popularity of the Buzzjet worldwide proves that this radical new, noisy topwater lure is the "real deal".

Nevertheless. this is a topwater lure the likes of which bass have rarely seen before. What I mean is, bass see poppers, walking baits and even prop baits go past them all the time on every body of water. However the Buzzjet is unique enough and uncommon enough not to have been seen by many bass yet.

The Buzzjet combines several different actions: 1) from the wide lip, 2) from the offset prop, 3) from the three chamber "variable weight system" inside it, and 4) simply from the large body displacing heaps of water. It waddles desperately on the surface, like a wounded, flopping, gasping baitfish that can't recover and can't swim back under the surface to get away. The Buzzjet mimics a chunky baitfish pinned helplessly on the surface. It's such an easy meal for bass.

"The idea was not there from the start to combine all these different styles and actions into a single lure," says deps company founder and Buzzjet designer, Kazumasa Okumura. "In the past I had made a deep crank that was fat in body style and also have made surface style wake baits. I wanted to create a bait that had a strong surface appeal and that was when the idea of combining a fat crank body with a prop style wake bait occurred to me. The toughest part of it was playing around where the weight transfer system should go and how much weight. The key was the left to right weight transfer system to give it that added roll which adds the flash and extra wake."

Best of all, no expertise or skill at "walking the dog" or popping the lure is required. The Buzzjet can simply be reeled steadily and all the bass-exciting action, frantic splash and flash is built right into the Buzzjet. The noisy Buzzjet can be fished all day without any of the arm fatigue that wears you down when "walking the dog" or popping other surface baits.

The Buzzjet can also be jerked or ripped across the surface in a stop-and-go manner like you'd use a propbait.

When the water's surface is rough or rippled, try keeping your rod tip down and reeling the Buzzjet fast enough to keep it just under the surface.

A Clear Look Inside the Buzzjet

The next few photos show inside a transparent Buzzjet. These photos may help an angler better understand how and why the Buzzjet works so swell.

The Buzzjet's large lip grabs the water, causing the Buzzjet to swim strongly on the surface.

The front weight chamber is sideways so the weight rolls from left to right and increases the side-to-side action of the Buzzjet. The left to right weight transfer system causes more turbulence and creates a stronger wake across the surface.

Overall, three weight chambers are inside. The three chambers work against each other. The result is constant imbalance and counterbalance as the weights roll and move in opposing directions. This results in a haphazard and irregular action.

The square weight chamber behind the belly hook hanger has two steel balls that move constantly across bumpy "rumble ridges" on the floor of the rattle chamber. The ribbed floor creates a constant drumming sound as the two weights rumble across the ridges.

The prop is pinned on an off-center angle. The result is an irregular prop movement, random noise and sporadic flash that comes and goes instead of a monotonous mechanical spin.

Buzzjet 96. Voted Japan's number one wake bait. The 96 is the large size version of the Buzzjet. This is a big bait, and simply because it is so big, you can lump it in with all other big swimbaits. When I say big, it is not long - 4 inches (96 mm) - but it is very thick across, very deep-bodied and weighs one ounce (30 gr). It is about the size of a ham hock. It is a big bait for big bass. The Buzzjet waddles and wakes desperately on the surface, like a wounded, flopping and gasping baitfish that can't recover and can't swim back under the surface to get away. The Buzzjet mimics a big baitfish pinned helplessly on the surface. It's such an easy meal for big bass.

deps Buzzjet Jr. The 'Jr' is the small size version of the Buzzjet. It is not too long - about 3 inches (72 millimeters) - but thick across, deep-bodied and weighs 1/2 ounce (14 grams). It is a compact, stubby bait that casts well, has incredible action, and is the perfect size to appeal to good-sized, chunky largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass.

The Buzzjet 'Bone' version differs from the standard Buzzjet in that the Bone is made of a natural white ABS resin called 'bone' material.

The 'bone' material is lighter and it is also harder. So it has more resonance from the impact of the rattle weights inside. The Buzzjet Bone has a higher-pitched rattling and louder buzzing noise from the prop.
