Big minnow baits like the Megabass Lates, the OSP Rudra and the deps Balisong Minnow 130F are examples of the current trend in Japanese lure direction toward larger floating/diving minnows for bigger largemouth bass. Keep in mind that 90% of bass fishing in Japan is done from shore. Therefore, shallow-diving minnows that swim above the level of many bottom obstructions enable shore anglers to run these big minnow lures relatively snag-free, bagging big bass in the process!

These certainly are NOT your everyday skinny minnow jerkbaits. So if you want a beefy jerkbait for big bass, give the Megabass Lates (and/or OSP Rudra amd deps Balisong Minnow 130F) a try.

Lates (pronounced something like ‘Lat-tes’) is named after the Nile perch, and is good-sized shallow-running minnow bait with three treble hooks. With slow and steady retrieve, this bait flashes in the water with incredible intensity due to its deeper body design and a rolling action aided by its high buoyancy. Lates is a good choice for big trout, largemouth, peacock bass, striped bass and any other decent size game fish.

Lates is also an easy lure to control. All you have to do is retrieve Lates at a slow to medium speed. The key is to reel the Lates slow enough that the bait will not dive under the water completely, but rather struggle between surface and sub-surface, producing a "wake" across the water’s surface. Calm, or near calm water is a must with this technique. Too much surface chop will make the lure dive, defeating the purpose of the method.

Anglers can also twitch the Lates with short snaps of the rod-tip, causing it to dart underwater and then pop quickly back to the surface (due to its high buoyancy), triggering mean strikes. This technique is especially deadly when there is a slight chop on the water.

Equipped with Katsuage Treble Hooks. Megabass original Katsuage hooks have an out-barb, out-point and are wide gap with a 'near-center' seat for the hook to stay pinned. These trebles are specifically designed for jerkbait bites, which are often tricky hooksets.
