Original Red Gill Sand Eel Lures ~ Teasers for Striped Bass Surfcasting
Bassdozer says, "What if there was a magic lure that could double, triple, even quadruple your catches? There is one - the Red Gill. I've used red Gills since the late 1970's and it is incredible how many fish want the Red Gill. There are many days and nights when far more fish are caught on the Red Gill teaser than on the larger primary lure."
It is the 4-1/2" size (115mm) in particular that is used as a teaser in front of a heavier lure by striped bass surfcasters in the northeast Atlantic and New England coasts of the USA. The name for the 4-1/2" size is the "Rascal" and it really is the only size normally used by surfcasters.
These are the Original Red Gills, made in England. There are considered to be sand eel imitations, but obviously the Red Gill may imitate spearing, silversides, worms and other bait too.
One pack of the Rascal 115mm / 4.5" length contains three (3) lure bodies per pack and includes three (3) size 2/0 Sakuma Manta hooks for rigging inside the Red Gill.
Rigging Tips
The nose has a hole to thread your line through, and a slot where the line feeds out the mod-body, on bottom. Then you tie the hook on, and snug the line and hook up so the hook sits properly inside the hollow part of the body designewd to accept the hook, as shown:
Photos show Red Gill teaser used in front of small wood swimmer. You may also use the Red Gill teaser in front of large wood or palstic plugs, tins, bucktails or almost any other heavier lure.
Storage Tip
It is a good idea to keep Red Gills in the original clamshell package in order to preserve their original molded straight shape. if you store Red Gills with a fold or twist tothe tail, they may not straighten out again, and may not swim as well not catch as many fish as a perfectly straight one. So keep them in the original clamshell case if at all possible (discarding the paper insert).
